The grave offense of the eight matters. Five conditions: First, a human male; second, conceiving him to be a human male; third, having a defiled mind; fourth, having committed the preceding seven matters without confessing; fifth, when the eight matters are performed, an offense is incurred. The eight matters: First, taking his hand, up to the wrist (behind which is grave). Second, taking his clothing, the clothing on his body. Third, entering a concealed place, meaning a place away from the sight and hearing of companions. Fourth, standing, speaking, or walking in a concealed place; these three matters are also like this. Seventh, leaning the bodies against each other, the two bodies touching. Eighth, making an appointment together, going together to a place of sexual intercourse. If a nun and a man are both defiled and commit the above seven matters, it is seven sthūlātyayas; if she does not confess, and commits the eight matters, it is a pārājika. According to this, committing eight acts of taking the hand does not constitute the grave offense; whether with one man she commits eight, at one time commits eight, over eight years commits eight, or with eight men fulfills eight: so long as eight are fulfilled, it is grave; nor is there a set sequence. The *Mahāsāṃghika* is like this. As for non-offense: if giving something, paying homage, repenting an error, or entering a concealed place to receive the Dharma, not doing evil deeds, there is no offense, because both lack a defiled mind. Below, where entering a dark room incurs a pāyattika, this is because there is no legitimate purpose, and the matter involves criticism and unsightliness, hence an offense is incurred.
