Entering a village alone has four conditions: first, it is a village of laypeople. Regardless of whether inside or outside a sīmā, entering alone into a dwelling place of laypeople within a saṃghārāma also constitutes an offense. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: If a nun walks alone to a village, wherever she reaches the village, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa; if in an empty wilderness without a road, within the distance of a drumbeat, it is also a saṃghāvaśeṣa; walking alone within a village past one sīmā is a duṣkṛta (based on this, walking alone within a ward or within a house incurs a duṣkṛta). The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If nuns travel together and reach the boundary of a city or town, they must cross the boundary together within an outstretched hand's distance of each other; if they cross the boundary beyond an outstretched hand's distance, it is a thullaccaya. Second, walking alone. Third, having no justifying circumstances. Fourth, crossing the boundary, she commits [an offense]. Formerly it was said: If wishing to enter a village, wherever there is a crossroad, merely crossing it constitutes an offense. The various lineages have no text [for this]. Basing on the Vinaya, it says: If walking alone where there is no boundary, within the distance of a drumbeat, leaving the companion's sight and hearing, she commits [an offense]. If reaching the village gate, not waiting for the companion behind, and both feet enter the threshold, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa; if there are already nuns in the village, there is no offense, because she takes the preceding nuns as companions. If leaving the village, the door threshold is also taken as the limit; violating it incurs an offense.
