Staying overnight alone has three conditions: first, staying overnight beyond the reach of an outstretched hand, regardless of whether among laity or the saṃgha. Setting beds in two places within the reach of an outstretched hand so that they can supervise each other is what enables avoidance of fault. If originally within the reach of an outstretched hand, but later separated due to sleep, there is no offense; if one originally had the intention to separate, with each turning over [in bed], an offense is committed. Hence the text says: If stretching out hands they do not reach each other, with each turn, each is a saṃghāvaśeṣa. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: They must be within the reach of an outstretched hand, and during one night, search for each other with their hands three times; they must not do it three times all at once; in the first, middle, and last watches of the night, they must search for each other once in each watch. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: If in a place where they cannot reach each other, in the first, middle, and last watches, it is a thullaccaya; when daybreak appears, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa. Second, having no justifying circumstances, except [threats to] life, pure conduct, delight in quietude, and so on. Third, with each lying down, each [offense] is charged.
