Second, clarifying the rules for the śikṣamāṇā (here rendered as "a female trainee in the Dharma"; she does not separately obtain a precept essence, but first establishes her aspiration, trains her mind through the six rules, and this serves as a condition for receiving [full ordination]). The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: "An unmarried maiden of eighteen should train in the precepts for two years." It also states: "One who was married at a young age and is ten years old may be given the six rules." The Sarvāstivāda states: "At age twelve, one may receive full ordination, because having been made to work by her husband's family, she is able to endure many hardships and has furthermore come to detest her previous secular condition." The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya is also the same. In the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, the six rules train the mind, testing and observing the conditions for receiving the major precepts; the two years train the body, allowing it to be known whether she is pregnant or not. The detailed text is as found there. Thus in the text, throughout life is for the sake of the Dharma; being able to receive [full ordination] after two years is because of having no pregnancy.
