The ancients said: "Broad learning serves to relieve poverty"; these words are truly verified. If the Dharmaguptaka is deficient in a practical procedure, other schools have clear texts; by principle one must act in accordance with them, and not go against both being valid. However, abandoning the urgent to follow the lax, relinquishing what exists to seek what does not, diminishing the right and wrong of minor and major offenses, and following the preferences of a foolish mind—this brings shame upon oneself, and how could the fault belong to another category? One should take one's original reception [of the precepts] as the authority, as the preface of this manual fully reveals; if one has not yet undertaken the Dharma at all, one relies on entering one school as a foundation, follows the text, and prudently puts it into practice, which can serve as a standard. But affairs have myriad paths, and following out every branch is difficult; here I merely outline the essentials to show the model. Within this, there are seven parts: 1. Clarifying the number of monks; 2. The applicability and limits of the sacred procedures; 3. Differences in repeated infractions; 4. The breadth and narrowness of encompassed affairs; 5. Distinctions in mental states and objects; 6. Differences in relinquishment and confession; 7. Hierarchical distinctions according to external marks.
