Second, the scope and limits of the sacred procedures. Dharmaguptaka: karmans briefly consist of three types, and extensively of eight classes. Adding to or subtracting from them fails to accomplish them, as the sacred seal is fixed: for instance, for a single jñapti, one cannot add a second jñapti; for a jñapti-dvitīya, one cannot make it a single jñapti, and so forth. The Mahāsāṃghika and Daśādhyāya state: adding to them achieves success; if one should perform a single jñapti, performing a jñapti-dvitīya or jñapti-caturtha is even better. Subtracting from them fails to accomplish them. The Mahāsāṃghika states: an intermediate karman is added, also called an permission-seeking karman. The intermediate karman in the Vinayavibhāṣā is also the same. The commentary explains: it means between a single jñapti and a jñapti-dvitīya, one additionally adds a jñapti-karman, announcing the matter to be established without asking for consent or non-objection. The other three karmans are identical to the Dharmaguptaka. It also says: for both intermediate karmans and direct jñaptis, three or more persons can perform them; the remaining three must have four persons or more. The Dharmaguptaka states: a karman may only be applied up to three persons, and the saṃgha cannot cite the whole saṃgha; if admonishing, the procedure applies to any number. In the Daśādhyāya, a karman may be applied to four or more persons receiving full ordination. The Mahāsāṃghika: if those who convey chanda are many and the seated monks are few, it is not permitted and is invalid. The Pañcavargika: it is permitted that many people assemble while few convey chanda and come. The Mahāsāṃghika: transferring chanda immediately invalidates it.
