Seventh, miscellaneous characteristics regarding following the precepts. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If one commits a saṃghāvaśeṣa with subsequent concealment, does not undergo parivāsa and the six nights, and is directly granted rehabilitation, this is designated as rehabilitation, but the assembly of monks incurs an offense; even if one does not undergo parivāsa, but directly undergoes the six nights and is directly granted rehabilitation, one achieves rehabilitation, but [the saṃgha] incurs an offense. Furthermore, there are six kinds of persons who do not perform the ritual at all and are directly purified: First, a thera who commits a saṃghāvaśeṣa, such that people would give rise to contempt; the Buddha said: "If with single-mindedness he gives rise to the thought, 'From this day forward I will never do it again,' he immediately attains purity." Second, a venerable one of vast learning. Third, one with abundant shame and remorse, who, if sent to undergo [the penance], would rather renounce the precepts. Fourth, one who is severely ill, unable to kneel on alternating knees, and lacks the strength to confess. Fifth, one whose dwelling place does not have the full twenty [monks], and who meets robbers on the road and dies. Sixth, one whose assembly is not pure, who goes to another region, and who meets robbers on the road and dies. The Buddha said: "If they generate the thought with single-mindedness to repent according to the Dharma, these persons are purified and obtain rebirth in the heavens." The commentary on the Vinaya states: "These six repentance methods must not be mistakenly used or counted upon through wishful thinking; doing so in vain is self-deception, and the offense cannot be eliminated. One must broadly consult those who understand the Vinaya, who alone are capable of deciding it."
