In recent times, bhikṣus mostly slight this rule, not contemplating future karmic retribution and recklessly applying the sacred Dharma. Namely, when not ill they claim to be ill, when impure they claim to be pure, and when lacking the desire to consent they claim to give chanda. They cause others to convey these false words and state them before the assembly. In proportion to the number of monks, each monk involved incurs three pāyattikas. The person who conveys it, if he knows and reports it, likewise incurs three offenses for each [monk]. The unwholesome karma is not light; why be negligent of oneself?
