The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: When deciding a matter, if inside a room, one steps out beyond however many [paces]; if in the open air, departing one fathom or more from the saṃgha, in all cases it is lost. If a room is small and cannot accommodate the saṃgha, they are allowed to sit under the front or rear eaves or in the courtyard; even though they do not hear the sound of the karman, it is valid. There are also seven persons: four kinds such as bhikṣuṇīs, and three kinds such as the mad; for all of them, chanda is invalid.
