One should address him, saying: 'Good son! You are free of both obstructive faults and difficult conditions. The saṃgha rejoices together and will confer the precepts upon you. Yet these profound precepts are the supreme good and extensively encompass the Dharma realm; you must arouse the supreme mind so that you may obtain the supreme Dharma, as described in the earlier conditions. Receiving these precepts now is to proceed toward the fruit of nirvāṇa, to face the three gates of liberation, to accomplish the threefold collection of precepts, and to cause the true Dharma to abide long. This is called the supreme mind. Next, to broaden your capacity: because the precept dharmas as numerous as dust motes and sand grains will pour into your body, you will never be able to receive and contain them with a body and mind obtained as karmic retribution. You should arouse the mind to take the measure of empty space as your body; only then will you be able to receive the wholesome dharmas of the Dharma realm. Therefore, the treatise says: "If these precept dharmas had physical form, as they entered your body they would make the sound of heaven collapsing and earth splitting; because they are non-physical dharmas, they leave you unaware." You must arouse a sense of awe and arouse the supreme, earnest mind. We now perform for you the noble karman dharma. This was instituted by the Tathāgata, generating the wholesome dharmas of the Dharma realm as numerous as dust motes and sand grains to pour into your body and mind; you must be aware of this.'
