Third: The intent of judging and determining cases according to the teaching in response to affairs. Since the Buddha's Dharma flowed east, nearly six hundred years have passed; various masters have forced interpretations and divided right from wrong, competitively fixating on commonalities and differences beyond description. This is truly because those who investigated did not understand the central tenets, and those who performed affairs were blind to the original purport. Therefore, the learning master must adhere to what is far-reaching, and one who maintains the teaching must bear the authentic texts. What matter would then incur censure or ridicule, and how could one sink into blame and reprimand? Now, in judging their observances and transgressions, one still adheres to their received precept essence; since the essence was received according to the Dharmaguptaka, how could one follow other schools in clear matters? Still fearing that some do not understand the grand guidelines, I further demonstrate their limits. That is, to arbitrarily take what one has studied to judge another's observance and transgression—if one happens to incur faults, it is solely due to unlearned ignorance! Now I comprehensively establish a fixed standard to jointly serve as a benchmark; once one consults its branches and outlines, everything will become clear and vastly apparent.
