The fourth precept on praising oneself to a woman to solicit offerings. Seven conditions constitute an offense: 1. A human female; 2. The perception of her as a human female; 3. Internally having a lustful mind; 4. Praising oneself and speaking coarse words; 5. The perception of them as coarse words; 6 and 7 are the same as the previous precept. The Vinaya states: 'Praising oneself' means saying one is handsome, has good complexion, left home from a great clan, observes the precepts, cultivates wholesome dharmas, practices the twelve dhūtas, and so forth. If one does not solicit sexual offerings, it is a sthūlātyaya; if one speaks of sexual desire and praises oneself, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa; if one merely speaks coarse words, one violates the previous precept. Under non-offenses: when preaching the Dharma or expounding the vinaya to a woman, the discourse touches upon this in sequence, and the woman assumes he is praising himself, there is no offense in all such cases.
