Precept 45: Sitting alone with a woman. Four conditions: first, it is a laywoman; second, in an open place (where a kappiyakāraka sees and hears, [unlike] a screened place); third, without a third person; fourth, sitting together within arm's reach constitutes an offense. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya [states]: Sitting with a woman in an open place, as many times as one gets up and sits down again, one incurs that many pāyattikas. Within one fathom of distance is a pāyattika; one and a half fathoms is a duṣkṛta; two fathoms or more is not an offense. The non-offenses for the previous dining family are as before; if they mutually observe the one-day precepts, it is a duṣkṛta.
