The fifty-third precept: tickling. Four conditions: first, a fully ordained bhikṣu; second, the intention to cause distress; third, the ten fingers of the hands or toes of the feet; fourth, contact constitutes the offense. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: Pointing at a bhikṣu with a finger also incurs pāyattika; pointing with five fingers incurs five pāyattikas; even pointing with a finger at a certain person to go when assigning duties also incurs pāyattika. When waking a sleeping śrāmaṇera, one should pull his robe. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: Tickling a śrāmaṇera, or even an animal, also incurs a duṣkṛta. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: If one tickles with another object, it is a duṣkṛta. Exceptions: If not done intentionally; or if one touches a sleeping person to wake them—all are permitted.
