The fifty-fifth precept: terrifying a bhikṣu. Five conditions: first, a fully ordained bhikṣu; second, the intention to terrify him; third, using any of the six sense objects such as form or sound to demonstrate and explain; fourth, each of the signs manifests; fifth, seeing or hearing it constitutes the offense. Regardless of whether the other person is terrified or not, all incur pāyattika. In the Vinaya, if it is not clearly understood, it is a duṣkṛta. Exceptions: in a dark place without fire, or in a place for defecation and urination, thinking there is a vicious beast and thereby becoming frightened; or even footsteps, the sound of clearing the throat, and the like causing fright. If one shows a form to another without the intention to terrify—and likewise for the other sense objects; or if such signs truly exist; or if one sees in a dream that someone will die, disrobe, lose possessions, or that an upādhyāya or parents are gravely ill or have died, and tells him so that he may know; or if done in jest or by mistake—all are without offense.
