The Mahāsāṃghika says: 'If having committed an offense, they weep and do not wish to part with the kāṣāya, deeply delighting in the Buddha-Dharma, they should be granted the karman for study-repentance. What is impure food for a bhikṣu is also impure for them; what is impure food for them is also impure for a bhikṣu. They may formally receive food for a bhikṣu, excluding fire-purified five kinds of living seeds, and gold and silver; they should receive food from a śrāmaṇera.' The Daśādhyāya says: 'If one violates a grave precept, they petition for the karman according to the Dharma. They undertake and practice all precepts formulated by the Buddha. They sit below the senior bhikṣus. They must not spend more than three nights with the fully ordained monks, and themselves must not spend more than two nights with laypersons or śrāmaṇeras. They may perform the two karmans of poṣadha and pravāraṇā for the saṃgha, but cannot complete a quorum; they cannot perform any other karmans. They may receive their monastic rains-age.' The Commentary on the [Vinaya-]mātṛkā says: 'This means that if there is no one capable of performing them, they may perform the prior two acts.' The Vinayamātṛkā says: 'Having been granted the repentance method of one motion and three announcements, they are termed pure in observing precepts. However, in this single lifetime they cannot transcend birth and leave death. Nevertheless, it obstructs them from entering hell.' The Sūtra on Curing Meditation Sickness says: 'One who repents a grave offense takes off the saṃghāṭī, wears the antarvāsas, gives rise to shame and remorse in the mind, engages in hard labor for the saṃgha, sweeping latrines, carrying dung, and so forth.' Those who need this practice of repentance are like that.
