In the Vinaya, one should instruct them to petition, saying: 'Venerable Saṃgha, listen! I, bhikṣu so-and-so, have committed the pārājika of sexual misconduct without concealment. I now petition the saṃgha for the pārājika precept. May the saṃgha grant me the pārājika precept out of compassion!' Having petitioned three times, the saṃgha solicits chanda and inquires into harmony, and answers: 'A karman granting the pārājika precept!' One should say: 'Venerable Saṃgha, listen! This bhikṣu so-and-so has committed the pārājika of sexual misconduct without concealment, and now petitions the saṃgha for the pārājika precept. If the time has come for the saṃgha, may the saṃgha grant permission: the saṃgha now grants the pārājika precept to bhikṣu so-and-so. Such is the motion.' 'Venerable Saṃgha, listen! This bhikṣu so-and-so has committed the pārājika of sexual misconduct without concealment, and now petitions the saṃgha for the pārājika precept; the saṃgha now grants the pārājika precept to bhikṣu so-and-so. Whichever elders approve of the saṃgha granting the pārājika precept to bhikṣu so-and-so, remain silent; whoever does not approve, speak! This is the first announcement (the second and third are also like this). The saṃgha has approved granting the pārājika precept to bhikṣu so-and-so, for the saṃgha has approved and is silent. Thus is this matter maintained.' The Buddha said: 'Having granted the pārājika precept, one should practice the compliant regulations, depriving them of thirty-five matters.' This is roughly the same as in the chapter on 'Saṃgha Regulations'; it merely adds that they may not recite the Vinaya amidst the assembly, though if no one else can recite it, it is permitted. Once granted the pārājika precept, when the saṃgha recites the precepts and performs karmans, whether they attend or do not attend is at their discretion. If they commit a grave offense again, they are expelled; if they commit saṃghāvaśeṣa or below, they are remedied according to the classes and categories of offenses. The Daśādhyāya says: 'If a probationer-śrāmaṇera (who is still a bhikṣu repenting a grave offense) commits saṃghāvaśeṣa, they petition for parivāsa and the six-night mānatva rehabilitation, and the saṃgha grants it to them in succession.' The above provisionally uses the precept against sexual misconduct as the model; the rest, regarding theft and killing, are cleared according to the Dharma. This differs from past masters who allowed repentance only for sexual misconduct.
