Regarding the fifth method: The treatise says: 'Observing within the thirteen residual offenses, whether for one day and night, etc., there was concealment or no concealment, in order to reveal stages such as with-concealment or without-concealment and establish parivāsa, mānatva, and so forth.' 'Stage' is a name for a place or status, referring to the four positions such as parivāsa. Within these positions, if there was concealment, one immediately proceeds to the stage of overnight dwelling; this refers to the rule of parivāsa, which must pass overnight in practicing the rule of parivāsa, hence it is called overnight dwelling. If there was no concealment, one proceeds directly to mānatva. Therefore it is said: 'in order to reveal stages such as with-concealment or without-concealment and establish parivāsa, mānatva, and so forth.' That is, where there is concealment one performs three dharmas, and where there is no concealment one performs two dharmas; this is the measure of applying the medicine, a relative rule.
