The Samantapāsādikā states: If a person undergoing parivāsa is invited by someone, or gives someone the upasampadā, he may suspend the practice; when the matter is finished, he resumes it. When relinquishing, he should say: “I now relinquish the parivāsa (recited three times, the text is as explained later).” If many bhikṣus come and go in the monastery, making it difficult to announce, he may relinquish the practice during the day; before the morning light appears, he must announce and resume it. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: Even for the six-night practice, by announcing to the Saṃgha he may suspend it for up to twenty-five nights. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: If it is difficult to gather the great assembly, or if he does not wish to practice, or if that person is frail and has much shame, he should go to a pure bhikṣu and announce: “Venerable sthavira! Today I relinquish the instructions and will not perform them.” When he wishes to practice, he returns to a pure person and announces: “Today I will act in accordance with the instructions.” They may run errands for, pay homage to, and welcome one another; they may also receive homage and service from śrāmaṇeras and kappiyakārakas.
