First is derivative thullaccaya, which refers to the preliminary expedients under the first and second classes of offenses. If according to the Daśādhyāya-vinaya: a grave offense derived from the first class is an immediate expedient—meaning body and mouth apply pressure but have not achieved fulfillment—which should be repented before the entire Saṃgha; a light offense derived from the first class and a grave offense derived from the second class should be repented before a community of four bhikṣus outside the boundary; a light offense derived from saṃghāvaśeṣa should be repented before one bhikṣu, its repentance procedure being identical to that for a pāyattika.
