1. Requesting confession before the saṃgha. In the saṃgha, following the previous deportment, with palms joined one says: 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen! I, monk so-and-so, intentionally kept many extra properties without declaring purification, incurring niḥsargika-pāyattika (if the limit was exceeded, state it if present; if the limit was not exceeded, merely recite the words above); separated from the saṅghāṭī overnight, incurring niḥsargika-pāyattika. These robes have already been relinquished to the saṃgha. Among them, each carries a pāyattika offense (if extra robes are said to be many, then the offenses are of unremembered number; if one says one or two, one must also state the exact number; for the three robes, the number is definitely known. If one borrowed a robe and resolved upon it, one merely repents the offense of separation, and the robe need not be relinquished. If the offense was committed long ago, one says:) Having committed the relinquishment of extra property, it has already been used and exhausted; each incurring a root pāyattika offense, the number of which I do not recall (if recalled, state it as present; the same applies if other purchased property has been used up). Now from the saṃgha I beg for repentance and confession. May the saṃgha permit me, monk so-and-so, to repent and confess. Out of compassion! (This procedure comes from the 'Rules for Settling Disputes' in the Vinaya; the text there is incomplete, so according to the standard it must be listed fully).' Having spoken thus three times, the senior monk informs the saṃgha, saying: 'Let the great assembly accept his confession!'
