Fifth, the formal method of confessing the root offenses. One should stand before the recipient of the confession with full deportment, and say orally: 'May the Venerable keep me single-mindedly in mind! I, the bhikṣu named so-and-so, deliberately kept numerous extra robes without declaring them pure, committing niḥsargika-pāyattika; I deliberately spent the night away from my saṃghāṭī, committing niḥsargika-pāyattika. These robes and articles have already been relinquished to the saṃgha. For each, I committed pāyattika offenses according to the number of transgressions mentioned above; furthermore, the extra relinquished goods I committed offenses over have already been used up and destroyed, and for each I committed fundamental pāyattika offenses, the number of which I do not recall. (If there was no wearing or using, everything from above is not needed.) Now before the Venerable I disclose and confess, not daring to conceal them. When confessed there is ease and joy, when not confessed there is no ease or joy. Remembering the offenses, I disclose them; knowing them, I dare not conceal them. May the Venerable remember me as pure, endowed with the precept body, [eligible for] pure poṣadha! (Said three times.)'
