Second, explaining the procedure face-to-face. The Vinayamātṛkā states: If four people live together and one dies, the [remaining] three should divide [the property] amongst one another. Two should orally agree to award [the robes] to the nurse as recompense; regarding the remaining property, the three say to each other: 'May the two Venerables be mindful! This property ought to belong to us.' The other two also say the same, spoken three times. If among three people one dies, first take the robes and bowl and directly confer them [on the nurse]; regarding the remaining property, the two [divide it] amongst each other according to the above procedure. In the text of the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, it directly explains that through three spoken statements to each other they receive and share the division, the wording being as stated in the treatise.
