The Ekottarika-āgama states: The Buddha addressed the fourfold assembly, "There are five benefits to constructing a bathroom: it dispels wind, cures illness, removes dust and dirt, makes the body light and agile, and brings a fair and healthy complexion. Bhikṣus should use expedients to construct them." The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: Bathrooms are to be placed in an out-of-the-way spot, and whatever is needed is to be prepared. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: When bathing, if one is not sick and has someone scrub them, it is a transgression. If members of the fivefold assembly scrub themselves, it is also a transgression; if they scrub each other, it is also a transgression. The Vinayamātṛkā states: In the bathroom, the senior elder should explain the causes and conditions of purity for the bathing monks, which is not for the sake of adorning the body or cleanliness, but solely to dispel wind and cold from within the body so that they may practice the Way with peace and stability; it should be for the sake of feeling disgust toward the bodily dharma, subduing the mental dharma, and arousing loving-kindness, in order to make them attain few desires and contentment. In every single matter like this, there are ceremonial procedures for the senior elder to preach the Dharma, admonishing and instructing according to the situation, which will not be detailed further here.
