The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: "The person in charge of saṃgha affairs should patrol the monastic quarters; first repairing the stūpa, and next [attending to] the affairs of the saṃgha of the four directions. One should constantly maintain this thought: 'May all bhikṣus who have not yet come, come; and for those who have already come, provide them with the four requisites without letting them lack anything.' Instructing śrāmaṇeras and attendants is also like this." The Samantapāsādikā states: "The Buddha always had one bhikṣu guard the monastery during mealtime." The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: "When appointing saṃgha attendants, begin from the junior ones."
