The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: "On the Buddha's birthday, the day of the turning of the Dharma wheel, or at large gatherings, when many banners and canopies are brought out to make offerings to caityas, if sudden wind and rain occur, all must collect them together; one must not say, 'I am a practitioner, a venerable elder,' and so forth; they should be placed in nearby rooms without protecting the rooms; they must be shaken out, folded, and stored away. Why? Because you all depend on these to sustain your livelihoods. When repairing beds and mattresses, when the gaṇḍī is struck, one must not walk slowly; all should repair and patch them together; furthermore, one must not claim to possess virtuous conduct [as an excuse]."
