Fifth, the essential vocations of leaving the household life. The two assemblies of the monastic and secular cultivate merit and wisdom separately; in principle one must recognize their boundaries and distinctively know what applies broadly and what is restricted. This does not mean that merit and wisdom are two separate things, or that monastic and secular walk separate paths; rather, because the worldly net is tangled and manifold, quiet cultivation is hard to sustain, whereas the gate of the Way is leisurely and unobstructed, allowing devotion to superior practice, they are divided into two paths. If one bases oneself on their mutual penetration, there is no impossibility of achieving both. For now, let us discuss both.
