A person who has left household life takes bodily precepts, the mind, and wisdom as his foundation; he must not engage in undertakings such as fabricating scriptures, images, or monastery buildings, which confuses the proper order. Therefore he is only permitted to instruct the rules and exhort laypeople; thus the saṃgha possesses the Dharma to construct, while the laity possesses the material means to act; relying on each other throughout the day, yet their roles remain permanently distinct. If one deviates from the Dharma and creates confusion, losing the sacred ordinances, this is called the destruction of the Buddha's Dharma; when each abides in his own allotment and mutually assists the other, they are scholars who maintain [the Dharma].
