The Vinayamātṛkā states: Cause the bow to twang without an arrow to make the bandits leave. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: When bandits come, one should strike the bell, shake the handbell, and cast stones, shouting, "Stones falling! Stones falling!" to frighten them into leaving. If pursued and one's robes are lost, wear saṃgha robes to return to the original place; if the place is empty with no one there, leave them nearby; if there are monks, hand them over, return to one's original place, and stand there, and [the owner] should take them back. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If bandits ask, "Where are the saṃgha's goods?" a bhikṣu must not reveal the location of precious items, nor may he tell a lie; he should point out the Buddha's property such as dwellings, beds, and seats, and point to the utensils of offering beside the stūpa, and so forth. If traveling on a road where there is open exposure, let the youths go in front; if there is danger from bandits or wild beasts, let the elderly be in the middle; if one wishes to cause the bandits to give rise to a mind of compassion, let the elder monks walk in front.
