Third, robes bestowed by donors (dānapati). There are two kinds: namely, in season (kāla-cīvara) and out of season (akāla-cīvara). Regarding in-season donations, they refer to when the summer retreat ends, lasting one month if there is no kaṭhina robe, and five months if there is a robe; this is the time when the Buddha benefits the bhikṣus and rewards their labors with the five benefits, hence it is called in-season donation; it is restricted solely to those who participated in the previous retreat. Regarding out-of-season donations, they refer to the months of the entire year, without distinguishing between winter and summer; whenever circumstances arise they are donated, regardless of the season, hence called out-of-season donations. Now, laying out the positions, there are four distinctions.
