Screening the persons to determine eligibility or ineligibility: The Pañcavargika-vinaya and Daśādhyāya-vinaya state: When the seven assemblies nurse a sick bhikṣu, only two assemblies obtain [the award]: śrāmaṇeras and bhikṣus; the remaining five are not eligible. Among nuns, three types of persons obtain it; the remaining four are not eligible. Even parents or siblings should not be given it (meaning that their labor was not fully complete). The Mātṛkā states: If a layperson nurses a sick bhikṣu, a small portion should be given to him; the three assemblies of nuns are treated the same; to a śrāmaṇera, the entirety should be given. The Pañcavargika-vinaya and Daśādhyāya-vinaya state: When given to a śrāmaṇera, it is equal to [that given to] a fully ordained monk. According to this, if many bhikṣus and śrāmaṇeras nursed the sick, it should be given to the one who saw it through to the end; if they saw it through to the end equally, it should be given to one person, who then distributes it in a secluded place. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If the nurse of the sick went out to beg for robes and medicine on behalf of the sick person, [the award] should be reserved and handed over upon his return; it may also be subsumed under the present [saṃgha], chanting in harmony to hand it over. If one came from another varṣā retreat to nurse the sick, he is entitled to the award. The Saṃghabhedavastu states: A nurse from outside the boundary is also entitled to the award.
