Eighth: The timing of the distribution. If one of the five assemblies dies, the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: One must not immediately lock his door. If he has a co-resident disciple who upholds the precepts and is trustworthy, give him the door hook; if he is not trustworthy, take the door hook and hand it over to the saṃgha's officer. After providing offerings for the bodily remains and completing the funeral arrangements, if the disciple upholds the precepts and is trustworthy, have him bring out the robes; if he is not trustworthy, have the officer bring out the robes, and thereafter the saṃgha distributes them. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: When bhikṣus distributed robes beside a corpse, the corpse arose to protect its belongings. The Buddha ordered that the robes should be distributed only after the corpse has been removed, or if the saṃgha is in a different location. The Vinayamātṛkā states: For distributing a bhikṣu's belongings, first take the deceased person away and bury him; after the funeral-attending saṃgha returns to the monastery, they bring the deceased person's belongings and place them before the saṃgha, and thereafter, as above, assemble the saṃgha in accordance with the Dharma to distribute them.
