Under "Returning the Tallies": in the phrasing of the verse, the first line means that reception and subsequent practice are without breach, so one is qualified to participate in holding the tally; the next line means returning the tally into the count, which in turn screens the purity of the essence. "Firmness" pairs with receiving, thereby representing maintaining the precepts; "joyful giving" pairs with returning, thereby representing giving. The commentary says: "Not stealing is the giving of wealth; not killing is the giving of fearlessness." Or perhaps, of the four immeasurables, it briefly mentions two minds, with loving-kindness and compassion contained within them, the meaning of which is seen in the following line. "Not returning to the seat" means all must kneel on one knee; only after the verse for passing the incense is finished do they sit to listen to the precepts. In this decadent age of indolence, the matter will surely be difficult to observe, and for now it is based only on the single moment of receiving the tallies. If there are those who uphold the Dharma, let them urge themselves to practice it.
