次科三，初請上座，前明維那陳請。後即上座對答。有堪不堪二答如文。出法之辭，臨機裁度，今多誦語。年少康強，亦稱老病，非所應也。即至下，二請次座。若辭下，三差能者。先預語重，疑是多寫。

The second section has three parts: first, requesting the sthavira. The former explains the karmadāna's presentation of the request. The latter is the sthavira's response. There are two replies—being capable or incapable—as in the text. The words for expressing the Dharma are tailored to the occasion, but nowadays most merely recite set phrases. Even when young, healthy, and strong, they claim to be old and sick, which is improper. From "Then reaching…" onward is the second: requesting the secondary elder. From "If he declines…" onward is the third: appointing a capable person. The words "in advance" (先預) are duplicated; it is suspected to be a scribal error.
