In "Section Ten: Conclusion of the Recitation," the first section: striking the bell again—if there is certainly no junior assembly, this is also unnecessary. From "If…" onward explains the chant (bhāṇā). That is, the final two verses of the vinaya preface: "The divine sages, men of five supernatural powers, / devised spells and incantations" (this gives a worldly analogy); "For the sake of those who have shame and remorse, / to gather together all those without shame" (restraining evil for the sake of good); "The Tathāgata established the prohibitions and precepts, / reciting them half-month after half-month" (matching the above analogy); "Having recited the benefits of the precepts, / we bow our heads and pay homage to all the Buddhas" (dedication and paying homage). The Commentary on the Chapter for Nuns states: "If one does not understand the preceding chant, doing the 'Dwelling in the World' chant is also acceptable." From "For the sake of…" onward explains the reason: unlike the former chant, it is for the sake of bringing to rest. From "Its…" onward, it consequently points out the earlier chant. That is, the first two verses of the preface: "We bow our heads and pay homage to all the Buddhas, / as well as the Dharma and the Sangha of bhikṣus" (paying homage to the Triratna); "Now we proclaim the Vinaya teachings, / to make the correct Dharma abide for long" (the original intent of paying homage: the upper line clarifies the intent, and the lower line clarifies the benefit); "With Upāli at the head, / and the other bodily witnesses" (tracing back to the assembly of the recitation to inspire trust); "Now we recite the essential meaning of the precepts; / let all worthy ones listen together" (raising the matter to admonish the assembly). I frequently see recited texts with errors and omissions, and moreover their meaning is not understood, so I briefly annotate and explain them. The Vinaya institutes that one must not perform half a chant; nowadays, some only recite the four lines from Upāli downward, which directly violates the Vinaya; although not a great harm, how can they avoid ignorance?
