In the next section, first it imparts admonition. From "Showing…" onward encourages following it. "The single vinaya etiquette" refers to the above admonition. From "Therefore…" onward cites proof. The ellipses (云云): at the beginning of fascicle 34, because Nanda did not come at the time of the poṣadha, and after arriving later immediately left without the assembly knowing, they reported it to the Buddha. Thereupon he instituted the rules for the sthavira: he should know whether the poṣadha on the fourteenth or fifteenth day is by day or by night; he should also know the location, whether in a bathhouse, lecture hall, or forest; he should also know how to broadly recite the five categories of precepts, down to the four matters and the verses, the rest being commonly heard by the Sangha; he should also have someone announce the time and place, and beforehand have someone sweep and clean, and know who should pronounce blessings and distribute tallies. (This institutes knowing the recitation of the precepts.) He should also know that when the poṣadha is recited, if dānapatis come, he should preach the Dharma for them and exchange inquiries. (This institutes knowing how to preach the Dharma.) Down to the second sthavira, it is also like this; this is found extensively in that text.
