In the next heading, it first cites the text to demonstrate. This refers to the "Retreat Skandhaka." It says: "The Buddha said: There are two kinds of rains retreats: the earlier rains retreat and the later rains retreat. Dwelling in the earlier three months means beginning to sit on the sixteenth day of the fourth month. Dwelling in the later three months means establishing it on the sixteenth day of the fifth month." From "although..." below, the principle is determined; the first sentence points out the textual omission. From "however..." below, it shows that the meaning is complete. Because the text designates the two days as earlier and later, the principle necessarily includes the middle; hence it says "it is naturally clear in principle." The Commentary states: "In the Skandhaka it only clarifies that earlier and later each dwell for three months, so there is no middle; thus when Śāriputra wished to enter the retreat at the Buddha's place, arriving on the seventeenth day, he was instructed to enter the later retreat. Speaking according to characteristics, only the first day is the earlier retreat, and the remaining thirty days are the later retreat; since all of them are termed 'later' in reference to the beginning, the middle is omitted." Below, it points to the text on determining boundaries, because the three procedures are distinct.
