Next, with an intercalary fourth month, the first sentence gives the general heading. From 'from' downward, it individually explains the three positions (hereinafter, differences and similarities are distinguished in terms of binding and departing, so that it may be easily understood). First, within staying for four months: those who bind on the sixteenth of the fourth month depart on the sixteenth of the seventh month; up to those who bind on the thirtieth day, who depart on the final day of the seventh month; those who bind on the first day of the intercalary month depart on the first day of the eighth month. (Binding and departing each span sixteen days.) From 'if the intercalary' downward clarifies the second position. This is because the number of days of stay is not fixed. Those who bind on the second day of the intercalary month stay for one hundred and nineteen days; up to those who bind on the thirtieth day of the intercalary month, who stay for ninety-one days; hence it says 'progressively fewer'. (Those binding across the twenty-nine days all depart on the first day of the eighth month.) 'Crossing over the leap month' explains the reason for the above gradual decrease. From 'if the fifth' downward is the third position. Since it does not involve the preceding leap month, it is only three months. Those who bind on the first day of the fifth month depart on the first day of the eighth month; up to those who bind on the sixteenth, who depart on the sixteenth of the eighth month. (Binding and departing each span sixteen days.) According to the Commentary, there are three propositions here: either entering retreat is separated by one month (those binding on the thirtieth of the fourth month and those on the second of the fifth month are both separated by an intercalary month), while pavāraṇā decreases by one day (binding on the thirtieth of the fourth month departs on the final day of the seventh month; binding on the first of the fifth month departs on the first of the eighth month, which is a decrease of one day); or entering retreat is separated by one month (binding on the first of the intercalary month and on the first of the fifth month is also called separated by one month), while pavāraṇā departs on the same day (both depart on the first of the eighth month); decreasing gradually in this way (one should say: entering retreat is separated by twenty-nine days, and so forth), up to entering retreat being separated by one day (binding on the thirtieth of the intercalary month and on the first of the fifth month is separated by one day), while pavāraṇā departs on the same day (likewise both depart on the first of the eighth month).
