Third, in the case of an intercalary seventh month: first, it marks the leap month. From 'from' downward, it enumerates and explains. First, staying for three months: binding on the sixteenth of the fourth month departs on the sixteenth of the seventh month; binding on the first of the fifth month is fulfilled on the final day of the prior seventh month, departing on the first day of the intercalary month; hence it says 'not reaching the leap month'. (Binding and departing each span sixteen days.) From 'fifth month' downward clarifies the second position. Those binding on the second of the fifth month reach only eighty-nine days by the final day of the prior seventh month; therefore, they must step across the empty month and take the single first day of the eighth month to make it complete, leaving the boundary the following morning (that is, departing on the second); up to binding on the sixteenth of the fifth month and departing, which can be understood (binding extends over fifteen days, departing has fifteen days). The Commentary establishes two propositions: either entering retreat is separated by one day (binding on the first and the second of the fifth month is separated by one day), while pavāraṇā is separated by one month (binding on the first of the fifth month completes on the end of the seventh month, departing on the first of the intercalary month; binding on the second completes on the first of the eighth month, departing only on the second, which is separated by one month); up to entering retreat being separated by fourteen days (those binding from the second up to the sixteenth of the fifth month), while pavāraṇā is separated by one month (binding on the second of the fifth month departs on the second of the eighth month; for those binding on or after the third, the prior retreats and the later advances; up to binding on the sixteenth, departing on the sixteenth of the eighth month, all separated by one month). From 'the remainder' downward refers to fuller explanations. What is seen today in the Karma Commentary is briefly cited as above; the text of the Yichao is lost.
