In [the section on] the conditions, the first heading is divided into two: first, showing the scope of persons and rituals. From "at that time" below, directly clarifying the four marks of conditions: first, making the indications. From "each" below, second, spreading the seats. By analogy with other ritual matters, both couches and mats are permitted; in this pravāraṇā alone, it is restricted solely to mats on the ground. From "the Vinaya" below, third, spreading grass. The upper two clauses preclude improper [practices], and the lower clause shows the method. "Not on the seats" refers to the place where mats are sat upon. "Not on the ground" means that to protect the body and robes, one must use grass as bedding. "Should leave the seats" means abandoning the mats and going to the grass. (The ancients' claim of 'kneeling on alternating knees' is incorrect.) However, not permitting [sitting] on the bare ground requires sitting on grass in meaning; yet because it is not explicit in the text, the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya is cited to decide it. From "all" below, fourth, cultivating respect.
