In the abbreviated declaration before the [monks of] five virtues, the first passage is twofold: first, it marks the conditions for abbreviation. 'What exists at the time' briefly mentions four kinds. 'Directly,' below, demonstrates the abbreviated rite: first it clarifies the extensive one beforehand; 'already,' below, clarifies the subsequent abbreviated one. The text omits speaking twice; the Commentary says: 'Before the five virtues, there are two abbreviations: speaking twice, and speaking once.' (Those who say there is no speaking twice are mistaken.) Receiving two persons: even if receiving three persons, in principle there is no harm; one just must not reach four.
