Under "guest monks arriving": first it generally indicates the Saṅgha and individual persons. According to the Vinaya, if pavāraṇā is not yet finished and guest monks arrive—whether fewer, equal (the number of guests and hosts being the same), or more (guests outnumbering hosts)—they all follow the senior and junior seats and perform pavāraṇā in sequence (this is not cited in the present text because it is easily understood); if pavāraṇā has finished and the whole assembly has not yet risen, or has already risen, and the arriving guests are few, one should grant them purity; if not granted, it should be dealt with according to the Dharma; if they are equal or more, pavāraṇā should be performed again; if not, it should be dealt with according to the Dharma. The text from "if..." onward specifically indicates individual persons. The Saṅgha procedure requires five persons, and facing someone requires four persons; thus both are indicated as being like the preceding.
