In the *Mahīśāsaka-vinaya*: reception is the same as in the various schools, but the method of relinquishment is uniquely different. That text counts a full four months starting from the day the robe is obtained; as with the rains retreat, decreasing in front and increasing behind, both extend over one month. Question: Why is there a difference? Answer: Examining the various schools, all grant four months; but these are tenets of the schools, and their views differ. The *Mahīśāsaka-vinaya* takes the reception of the robe as the beginning; the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya* regards the kārttika period as constantly open, not included in that number. If it is received on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, it does not prevent the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya* from still making four months; the *Mahīśāsaka-vinaya* on the contrary gets five months; this can be understood through reflection.
