In pointing to the remaining doctrines: However, although all of them are now deleted and abridged in this manual, the explanations put forward by the various masters are not necessarily entirely incorrect. Some doctrinal chapters opened doorways [of understanding], and some questions and answers resolved subtle obscurities; why then excise them entirely here? The text clarifies that the intention was that they ought to be preserved according to reason; it was solely because they are difficult to understand and not suited to beginners that they were made into a separate work titled the Yichao (Doctrinal Manual). The text has three fascicles, of which the last fascicle has already been lost; therefore, what is pointed to now is largely missing from that text. The occasion for the emergence of the Yichao is clearly written here. Ancients mostly spoke falsely, saying either that it was what remained of the two commentaries, or that it was the draft of the two commentaries, as has been refuted elsewhere. Its full title is Shipi'ni yichao (Abridged Manual of Vinaya Doctrines); here the wording is concise, substituting the character "gather" (集); below, referring simply to Yichao or Biechao (Separate Manual) are all examples of this. In the text: "Accommodate" (通) is like to permit; "other treatises" refers to doctrinal explanations. Permitting their explanations clarifies that they may be preserved. The upper two clauses clarify the profundity and obscurity of the doctrines. The lower two clauses clarify that they do not benefit beginners. "Those of open understanding" refers to scholars of wide learning and deep insight. From "Fully" downward, it directly points to that text.
