"Indicating the purpose" refers to the intention behind the compilation of the manual. "Hope" (庶) means to look forward to. "To consult" means to inquire. The upper part clarifies that the teachings have an orderly sequence and do not require external seeking; the lower part shows that affairs have a standard of reliance, leaving no doubt regarding gain and loss. "Useful when facing circumstances" and "at once an affair and a practice" form a parallel couplet; the phrasing differs, but the meaning is the same. These four clauses are the great central purport of the entire work; uniquely different from the various masters, they soar far above the nine dynasties. They exhaust the Tathāgata's intention of expedient means and open the gate of liberation for the multitude of sentient beings. That by which the Triratna is maintained and that by which the five vehicles set forth on their journey find their efficacy right here! For this reason, the title "Transactions" is marked at the very beginning of the work, and words instructing beginners pervade the entire text. All who make up the community of the Way invariably proceed through this gate; though Chan and the doctrinal teachings differ, none fail to receive its benefit. In closely tracing its vast salvation, how could words suffice?
