In the third major section, indicating the marks of practice that are elucidated, first in the general indication: "Dwelling" (宅) means to reside. The Buddha's gate is vast, encompassing, receptive, and pure, compared to an ocean; the Saṃgha receives the Buddha's transformation and resides right within it. If one commits a grave prohibition, it is called a "marginal offense" (pārājika), meaning one is washed out beyond the margin of the Buddha-ocean—such is its meaning. "Current" means water; the Dharma can nourish things, so it is compared to water. "To participate" (廁) means to partake. "Ranks" (伍) means the assembly. This clarifies that the body of a bhikṣu is endowed with the Triratna; the Dharma-practices cultivated, though manifold, are completely subsumed under the community, personal, and shared [practices]. However, based on the essence of practice, there are only the two maintenances; but within positive action, a distinct category is singled out: karmavācanā and Saṃgha-dharmas are taken as community practice, while the remaining miscellaneous dharmas all return to shared practice. In order to divide the overarching outline from the specific details, leaving no confusion between the collective and the distinct, it says, "there are only three categories."
