次科，初二句標難。謂事隨篇類，則使三行互有投寄。如上卷〈標宗〉亦明法體行相，及捨戒、六念、別人說恣、識疑發露之類，則眾行兼自共也。又中卷〈懺六聚〉中眾別悔法，則自行兼眾共也。下卷攝衣攝食亡物等諸羯磨法，并雜行等，則共行兼眾自也。三行相參，不可一判，故云難也。若下，釋其難相，成繁闕過，上二句示闕略過。長途散釋者，謂不約三行收束也。寡討論者，謂不稱機宜也。以言無所歸，人難披撿故。下二句明傷繁過。言曲分者，謂逐卷隨篇，明三行簡判也。過在繁碎者，亂於教旨也。

In the next section, the first two clauses mark the difficulty. This means that as affairs follow chapter categories, the three practices are made to intersect and reside within one another. For example, in the upper fascicle, the chapter "Marking the Central Purport" also clarifies the Dharma-essence and marks of practice, as well as matters such as relinquishing precepts, the six mindfulnesses, individual confession and pravāraṇā, and acknowledging doubts and disclosing offenses; thus community practice combines both personal and shared. Furthermore, in the middle fascicle, under "Repenting the Six Classes," the community and individual repentance rites mean personal practice combines both community and shared. In the lower fascicle, the various karmavācanā methods for keeping robes, keeping food, deceased members' belongings, and miscellaneous practices mean shared practice combines both community and personal. Since the three practices intermingle, they cannot be judged uniformly; hence it is called "difficult." From "If" downward, it explains the marks of this difficulty, resulting in the faults of proliferation or omission. The upper two clauses show the fault of omission. "Scattered explanations in a long course" means not gathering them together under the three practices. "Little discussion and analysis" means not according with suitable capacities, because when words have no focus, it is difficult for people to search and consult them. The lower two clauses clarify the fault of excessive proliferation. "Minute division" means determining and distinguishing the three practices fascicle by fascicle and chapter by chapter. The fault of being overly cumbersome and fragmented lies in throwing the teaching's purport into disarray.
