敘不學中，初科，上二句標人。澆末是時。淺識者，無所解故。庸見者，同塵俗故。雖下，示庸淺之相。先且分定；初二句，明學寡；次二句，明行薄。又次二句，明情疎；復次二句，明志塞。局下至體之，明言論鄙俗。名參者，無實德故。緇服即黑色衣。不依律者，違聖教故。疎野者，無所拘故。真要與下真趣，竝指前三學。封猶閉也。守株喻其愚也。（《韓子》曰：宋人有耕者，見田中株，兔走觸之，折頸而死。因釋耕守株，冀復得兔。）志即是心。絕通望者，無所見也。就言論中，初二句謂無稽實。局塞也。之猶於也。首即頭也。此句躡上生下。次四句明混同流俗。事即所說之事。研下，舉積學比況。闇託，謂不達前事，冥然為之。體即解也。

In narrating the failure to study: in the first section, the first two lines designate the persons. 'The corrupt and final [age]' is the time. 'Shallow understanding' means having no comprehension. 'Mediocre views' means conforming to the dust of worldly customs. From 'although' downward shows the marks of mediocrity and shallowness. First, dividing them tentatively: the first two lines explain scarcity of learning; the next two lines explain thinness of practice. The subsequent two lines explain estrangement of feeling; the following two lines explain blockage of aspiration. From 'confined' down to 'comprehend it' explains vulgarity in discourse. 'Participating in name' means having no real virtue. 'Black robes' refers to black-colored garments. 'Not relying on the Vinaya' means violating the holy teaching. 'Coarse and wild' means being without restraint. 'True essentials' and 'true destination' below both point to the preceding three trainings. 'Confined' means closed off. 'Watching the tree stump' illustrates their foolishness. (Han Feizi says: In Song there was a farmer who saw a stump in the field; a running hare struck it, broke its neck, and died. He then abandoned his plow and guarded the stump, hoping to obtain another hare.) 'Aspiration' is the mind. 'Severing the hope of penetration' means having no understanding. Concerning discourse: the first two lines mean lacking basis in fact. 'Confined' means obstructed. 'Of' means in or at. 'Head' means the skull. This line follows from the above and produces what follows. The next four lines explain blending with vulgar conventions. 'Matters' refers to the matters being discussed. From 'investigating' downward cites accumulated learning as a comparison. 'Blind reliance' means acting in the dark without understanding previous matters. 'Comprehend' means to understand.
