The Mahāsaṃnipāta quotes the text of its nineteenth chapter, "Protecting the Dharma". First, it quotes the bodhisattva's words of request. "Five defilements" (滓 is pronounced with the fanqie 阻史 [zhǐ]), meaning turbidities. As for the five turbidities: first, the turbidity of the kalpa (the turbidity of the kalpa has no distinct essence; it is merely that the four turbidities converge at this time; the Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka says: from the diminishing kalpa when human lifespan is twenty thousand years, it becomes the turbidity of the kalpa); second, the turbidity of views (the five sharp emissaries); third, the turbidity of afflictions (the five dull emissaries); fourth, the turbidity of sentient beings (likewise having no distinct essence; this nominal designation is established by mixing the preceding sharp and dull fruit-retributions); fifth, the turbidity of lifespan (holding together form and mind, wearing down years and shortening life). "As in other lands..." adduces other places as precedents to express the intent of the request. The Buddha said: "Stop, stop! The Buddha himself knows the time." If causes and conditions have not yet arisen, then he does not make advance prohibitions; because he did not prohibit them immediately, it is said that "he permitted them later".
