Regarding the Mahāyāna sūtras, the Avataṃsaka has multiple translations. Here it quotes the sixty-fascicle translation of the Jin dynasty. It is the text of the eighth chapter, "Clarifying the Dharma", which has four sections. It says: Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas teach and transform sentient beings to give rise to the bodhicitta, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Buddha not to be severed. They reveal and explain the profound and wonderful treasury of dharmas, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Dharma not to be severed. They fully receive and maintain the teachings and rules of deportment, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Saṃgha not to be severed. (This is the first section.) Furthermore, they are fully able to praise all great vows, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Buddha not to be severed. They differentiate and explain the twelve links of dependent origination, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Dharma not to be severed; they practice the six harmonies and respects, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Saṃgha not to be severed. (This is the second section.) Furthermore, they plant the seeds of buddhahood in the field of sentient beings to sprout the shoots of correct awakening, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Buddha not to be severed. They do not begrudge their bodies or lives to protect and maintain the true Dharma, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Dharma not to be severed. They skillfully govern the great assembly so that their minds are free from worry and regret, and therefore can cause the Jewel of the Saṃgha not to be severed. (This is the third section.) Now, the five sentences above in the Manual are all extracted from the text concerning the Jewel of the Saṃgha. The first two sentences clarify individual practice, the next sentence is the practice of the assembly, and the latter two sentences clarify gathering the assembly. When practice unfailingly accords with the Dharma, there is no worry or regret. From "past, future..." onward is the text summarizing the fourth section. Following the Buddhas' teachings of the three times without transgression means protecting the Three Jewels.
